This New Year, Aspire for More
“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.”
– Steve Jobs
What are your hopes and aspirations for the New Year? Do you have any or have they given way to the little voice in the back of your head that reminds you not to bite off more than you can chew or that the road to hell is paved with good intentions?
Ever feel sometimes that your ideas are just ‘pie in the sky’ and unrealistic?
Well, I’m going to say something that may surprise some of you. So what? People can think whatever it is they’re going to think and you can’t stop them. They’re entitled to their opinion – but never let someone else’s opinion determine the size of your dreams. There’s nothing wrong with thinking big. In fact, it’s healthy.
I can tell you from experience that when we aspire to attain something, it invokes more than words, it invokes passion, motivation and focus. I can also tell you that when we don’t think big, we’re stuck in “what was”, rather than “what will be.” While it is true that aspirations are personal by nature, they have the power to influence those around us, and as such, lights a spark that inspires others to not only help us make our dreams come true, but empowers them to pursue some of their own as well. That’s good.
We move into 2015 based on footprints we’ve laid down over the course of this past year, and all the years preceding it. The steps we’ve taken have already left their imprints in the knowledge and experience we’ve accrued over the course of our journey. Our aspirations may rest on untrodden paths into territory, but our feet have already done the groundwork and makes our footing more secure.
My wish for us all in the coming year, is that we dream just a little more than we did this year, that we reach just a bit beyond our imaginations, that we aim loftier. Remember, the status quo never gets us to where we want to be. We need to move beyond it. We may not accomplish everything, but we will accomplish some. We may not win all the time, but we will always gain.
“Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among stars!”
