As a business leader, it’s easy to get caught up in tasks which don’t advance your goals or distract you from focusing on the bigger picture. Effective leaders are great at managing their time and keeping their attention on moving their companies forward, but being a good time manager takes practice and training.

I am a business coach who serves the East Bay Area, and in my years of corporate experience I have learned how to effectively manage time from some great executives and owners. Now, I am happy to share this helpful skill as part of my coaching for local business leaders.

In the sections to follow, I will answer some common questions about time management from a coaching perspective and hopefully shed some light on how it can help you thrive personally and in turn help you reach your professional goals.

What is time management?

Time management is the practice of continually using the hours you have each day to advance your personal and professional goals. There is no magic bullet of time management, but rather it’s a skill which is perfected through practice and a little guidance. An effective time manager understands their goals and aligns their schedule to meet them.

Why is time management important for business success?

A leader must focus on moving their business forward, and if they are constantly dealing with day to day tasks or spending their energy in the wrong places then their business could easily stagnate. Time management is important for everyone in the business, and an effective leader can help create a culture of positive time management from the top down. When people are focused on reaching their goals and make the most impactful tasks a priority, it can increase efficiency and lead to better results.

What are some effective time management tips?

There are many practices you can implement to be a better time manager, including:

  • Delegate Often: A good leader must trust others to perform tasks, and this allows you to focus on building the business.
  • Manage Priorities: Understanding which tasks impact your goals the most and devoting your time to them is key.
  • Seek Helpful Resources: There are many ways to automate tasks and schedule more effectively using modern technology.
