What Matters Most

Bill Cosby said ‘I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone.’

He wasn’t just speaking about comedy.

Maybe you want to reach a larger market but in reality you already have a great niche and could triple your sales if you took the time to develop it instead.

Is more always better?

That depends. Can you make as much meaning for everyone as you do for some?

Can you care as much about everyone as you do for the some you care about now?

What do you sacrifice by going after ‘everyone’ instead of targeting more ‘some ones’?

Will the ‘some ones’ still be loyal or will they feel you’re discounting them if you expand your market?

Will that matter to you?

Think deeply about these questions before answering. You may discover what matters most to you, and that can make all the difference.

N. Taylor Thompson, writing for the Harvard Business Review Blog Network recently said, “Only start something that matters; then you can look back, satisfied, whatever the outcome.”
